Twelve Hours in a City

My journey, courtesy of JetBlue, is mostly about visiting friends and seeing a few places I’ve never been to—New Orleans, yo! You know the story by now: I quit my job and a week later, JetBlue announced this promotion. The timing could not have been more perfect.

Now, for a moment or two, I thought, “How can I turn this into a professional opportunity?” I thought about all the media contacts I had (as a now-former-publicist) and the ways to work this whole thing to get some media attention. But I never thought about it very seriously. There’s one main issue: I’m not very interested in media attention. For clients, sure. For me? I’d rather watch the circus than be in the main ring.

I’ve been reading any JetBlue press related to the All You Can Jet promotion, and it didn’t take long to find the Twelve Hours in a City guys—Clark and Joe. Check out their blog. This should be a textbook for how to garner publicity with social media.

First: They have a clear concept and media hook: They’re traveling to as many cities as possible and only staying for 12 hours.

Second: One of them is a pro photographer, so all their images look great.

Third: Their site, built on Wordpress, is tricked out so you can follow them easily on Twitter, become Facebook fans, see their Flickr sets. In fact, they have their Twitter feeds and a Flickr feed in the right rail and links to each under each post. It couldn’t be easier to check out their content.

Also, the site is easy as hell to use, with bios, media relations, and a nice log of the press they’ve already done. Pretty impressive for a project that just got started and two guys who birthed this thing a few weeks ago.

Fourth: They have a logo for Christ’s sake. And stickers.

Fifth: They love to mug for the camera and talk about what they’re doing. This doesn’t come naturally to everyone. They look completely at ease, with no pretense or hesitation. They’re Everymen and they’re good at it.

So, if anyone out there is looking to get semi-famous quick, keep this in mind: a lot of people have the same opportunities, but what really, really matters is how you take advantage of something like All You Can Jet. A clear hook that is compelling to regular folks and media folks and can be explained in one sentence; a clean, easy-to-use site; smart, effective use of social media; logistical skills (don’t tell me what they’re doing isn’t challenging); and finally, are you ready to do the task? These guys look game to travel like madmen for a month, spending only 12 hours in each city. Me? I’m looking forward to spending that much time in Powell’s Books.

As my friend Isaac said last night, these guys are bound to get a book deal and speaking gigs out of this. I’d say I agree, plus I know you’ll see them on one of the morning shows soon.

Good luck guys!
