The joys of being home are simple: a familar bedroom, friends, a homemade dinner, great stories, and laundry.
I was home for about 20 hours, and in that time I was able to take a nap, interview Jason “Liggy” Liggett—Wilco’s lighting designer—eat pho ga and shrimp spring rolls, be treated to homemade pizza by Miss and Sabin, and drink IPAs and watch South Park. (I also did laundry.)
A word about those pizzas. I have to emphasize here that Miss and Sabin are as talented as any cooks I’ve ever known. They have both subtlety and confidence in the kitchen, and work together as only an old, almost-married couple can.
Pizza #1: Fresh Junior’s crust with bourbon glazed local apples, carmelized onions, cheddar cheese, fresh sage and a drizzle of balsamic reduction. I wish I had a photo of that one, though it wouldn’t matter. You can’t eat a photo.
Pizza #2: Same crust with roasted root vegetables from the garden: three kinds of carrots, and beets. All the veggies carmelized nicely and that sweetness was counterpunched by some Maytag blue cheese. Shazam! (A bit of balsamic pushed it over the top, of course.)
Pizza #3: Fresh heirloom tomatos and basil out of the garden, with some mozzarella. Whew. This was a nice contrast from the first two.
Yeah!
