Last night, after Noah, Elizabeth, Eben and I returned from our trip to the Willamette Valley for wine tastings, we joined some friends for a picnic on the lawn of the Chapman School in NW Portland. From there we watched the Vaux’s Swifts settling in for the night.
These extraordinary birds roost in a now-defunct chimney. There are roughly 20,000 of them, and when they’re all swirling around, preparing to roost for the night, it’s like a living cloud of tiny bodies putting on a show for all the Portland families who have camped out for the evening.
Here’s some more detailed info from the Audubon Society of Portland’s website.
