Rainy Day, Dream Away… Or Go to Whole Foods

Yeah, I know. That seems a bit odd, considering I’m in New Orleans.

What can I say: It rained all day, and though I got some good work done for a client, shored up a little more local music work, blogged a bit, and saw a compelling job opportunity for the winter, I didn’t have a very “New Orleans” experience.

But this happened: Arturo (I can’t help but want to call him Bandini; any John Fante fans out there?) wanted to go to Whole Foods. This is the peripatetic Paraguayan documentary filmmaker I’m hanging out with (along with Aaron Dunsay, yo), and he only eats apples, cucumbers, tomatoes and figs. No, really.

So Bandini wants to go to Whole Foods, and he wants to take the trolley. Knowing fully that I have a phone meeting between 6 and 7 p.m., I decide, at 4ish, to go with him. May I just say that traveling across NOLA in a trolley (with a transfer) to go to Whole Foods—under a little pressure—is, well, not such a good idea? Unless, of course, you have a healthy respect for the absurd. Which I do. But usually not when I have to do any sort of business.

But Bandini got his fruit. Not only did he get it, he GOT it: Literally 20 pounds of cucumbers, apples, tomatoes, and figs. It was hilarious watching him pack all that fruit in a little backpack—and this is a small guy. 5’ 4”. We had a long conversation about how hard it is for a guy that short to get girls. Girls like tall guys, apparently. I didn’t know. Great guy, Bandini. Likes to talk. Only eats fruit. Gets up at 5 a.m. to go biking. And he’s making a web series about pizza. Good guy.
